31st October 2014

Weather: Beautifully sunny, unseasonally warm and mild.
Team: Formal

I helped put in more of the Rubus biflorus in the Canal Garden for the new garden scheme (see post October 30th for more details).

Then I helped out with the crocus planting. On the Conifer Lawn they were doing a week long mass planting of crocuses and getting parents and children involved (Photo 1). I helped to pre-make some of the holes with a long handled bulb planter (Photo 2), the children then came assisted to put the bulbs in them and to plug the holes.

Photo 2: Creating holes with the bulb planter and 'plugs' from the soil & turf lifted out, that is stamped back into the hole once the a bulb is placed (top side up).
Then I helped do some bulb planting myself to complete the Top Terrace bedding. 4000 Tulipa 'Spring Green' had to be planted in altogether in grid like lines (Photo 3).
Photo 3: Planting in 4000 Tulipa 'Spring Green' with a hand held bulb planter - I am not sure about the efficiency of these as oppose to a bulb planting hand trowel, as they get clagged up after a while and had could still give you RSI. One not so well made one broke on me half way through too.
