Department: Turf

We finished setting the grass into the ground with half moons, forks and rakes around the edges. Then we reseeded the patchy areas. First we sowed the seeds, then we put a thin layer of Wisley compost on top of these, almost throwing it sideways onto the ground or sprinkling it on with shovels, then weraked it over with a rubber rake - the latter acts like a lute - this increases the chance of germination by 60%.

Photo 1: Demonstration of how dry it is underneath turf laid yesterday, the grass itself draws up a lot of water - it was raining today and ideally we would have laid it on the wetter ground.

After that I went round yellow grass areas that has had a marquee on it for events with a large magnet attached to the back of a Kubota, to pick up any bolts or screws that have been dropped by accident. After this me and Simon hand mowed these with the Honda mowers these areas - the grass is particularly longer than the surrounding green areas, because the grass is in the dark when it's under the marquees and it etoliates.

Photo 5: Using a new machine - the Kubota, this one I have to pull a metal piece on the bottom left to stop it near the foot because it won't stop with the key anymore. Oil checks - diesel goes black after 10 hours, if the oil is totally black this isn't so much of an issue, it is when it's blotchy black that is when it may need checking by Peter who looks after all the machinery.

Photo 6: The magnet attached to the back - sharp turns is not good as I could run it under the wheels.
