Team: Formal.
I worked with Alex, pruned 4 different kinds of Buddleia including Buddleia davidii 'Pixie Blue' & Buddleia davidii 'Nanho Blue'. Rather than formative pruning, it is just to take the weight off the shrubs, to dead head and to prevent wind rock. They were pruned to just above my head height (over 5ft). Ideally this would be earlier in the year, just after flowering (September/ October time), so that younger growth has time to harden off once 'revealed'. But weather is still quite warm so hopefully they won't be affected. They will be pruned again in spring and taken back much further except for Buddleia davidii 'Nanho Blue' - a more delicate Buddleia. More height was left to this, lightly thinned and deadheaded. It won't be pruned much more in spring because it is less vigorous.
