Chelsea Show Build

Planting is coming on, most of the time we are leaving the plants in their pots but for areas that we wanted them closer or where there is limited space we do take them out of the pots.

I even helped with some planting - some Geranium and Melittis 'Alba', the latter are like little small self sowing versions of Tellima grandiflora. I like how you can see the low perennials through the gaps of the Corylus avellana stools, which are simple plants like Lunaria annua.

Summary of design again - gabion wall at the back with pattern, sphere with winding path leading to free standing gabions. Field maple hedges on the back and one side, Malus tree at the front. Three Alnus glutinosa 'laciniata' trees dotted throughout the garden, stools of Corylus avellana (at the back). Mainly perennials on the bottom layer. There are even plants that are regarded usually as weeds e.g Urtica dioica and Galium aparine and being carefully mulched around.

The back consists of damp woodland plants, transitioning to dry gravel plants at the front. There are no set planting plans. They have grown all their own plants, which is also unusual for show gardens. The bigger trees are bought from Deepdale nursery. The Corylus they dug from their own coppice woodland, some of the lawn pieces are from Rosy's back garden.

Everything was being well watered everyday that it was quite hot - used and unused plants. The water is kept off the leaves if in case of hard water residues. The hose is tied to a stick to reach tricky areas. Yesterday a lady who was helped creat a long thin tube for getting mulch into difficult to reach spaces. There were a few people brushing off woolly aphids on the Alnus to prevent them from dropping on the perennials. Yvonne another long time helper of Rosy's hair sprayed the dandelions seed heads to keep them in tact on the lawn pieces. She also helped to make a smaller version of the patterned back wall on the side - she is an artist that has been involved in show gardens herself. There are a lot of show build veterans here.
